DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z June 4, 2012

Southwestern United States:
Remnant smoke, most likely from the Whitewater-Baldy fire in Mexico,
is rotating around a surface high centered over Utah/western Colorado.
The remnant smoke is moving westward across Arizona, northward through
Nevada and extends as far north as southern Idaho. Additional smoke
from the George fire in Tulare County, CA and the White Rock fire in
Lincoln County, NV are adding additional smoke to this area.

Whitewater-Baldy fire in New Mexico:
The large fire complex in the Gila National Forest continued to produce
smoke this evening. The densest smoke was located in the following
counties by sunset: Catron, Sierra, Socorro, and Grant in NM and Greenlee
and Graham in AZ. A majority of the dense smoke associated with the
active burning moved south this evening.

Canada:
Several wildfires in Northwest Territories produced localized areas of
moderately dense smoke this evening. Extensive cloud cover prevented
smoke detection around known fires in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Blowing dust in the United States:
Nevada:
A few hours before sunset this evening, an area of light blowing dust/sand
originated in Washoe, Humboldt, and Pershing Counties around 04/0015Z.
This blowing dust moved to the northeast.

Blowing dust in Mexico:
Blowing dust originated this evening west of Carborca in Sonora this
evening around 03/2315Z. The dust moved eastward and approached the
Arizona/Sonora border by sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
