DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z June 18, 2012

Smoke:
Carolinas:
A large wildfire in eastern North Carolina is creating dense smoke which
is moving to the south. Remnant smoke from this fire has remained off
the coast and moved south to the coast of South Carolina and is now
moving inland.

Central US:
A large area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke is located
over the central US. This smoke is likely from the fires in Arizona,
New Mexico, Colorado and Mexico. The smoke extends from central Utah,
through Colorado and Wyoming. This area becomes moderately dense through
Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.

Colorado:
The Little Sand Fire complex is generating large amounts of dense smoke
which is fanning out to the east.

Arizona:
The 257 Fire in Gila County, but may be the Poco Fire due to proximity,
is creating moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving east into
west-central New Mexico.

Canada:
Large areas of light smoke continue to circulate over the waters north
of Labrador. This is likely remnant smoke from the large fires in
Labrador and northern Quebec.

Blowing Dust/Sand:
Idaho:
In eastern Butte County, blowing dust/sand originates at 18/1945Z,
moves east and continues through sunset.

Oregon:
A small area of blowing dust/sand originates in south-central Lake County
beginning at 19/1945Z and continuing until 19/2345Z.

California:
Honey Lake in southern Lassen County begins producing blowing dust/sand
at 18/1545Z and continues through sunset. The blowing dust/sand extends
through northern Nevada nearing the Utah border. In southern California,
multiple areas of blowing dust/sand originate in Riverside, San Diego and
Imperial counties. This blowing dust/sand begins at 18/2015Z, continues

County, just south of Death Valley National Park, a small area of blowing
dust/sand originates near 19/2345Z and continues through sunset.

Nevada:
In north-central Churchill County, blowing dust/sand originates and
moves east reaching the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The blowing dust/sand
begins at 18/1515Z and continues through sunset. Anther area of blowing
dust/sand begins in northern Mineral County. This blowing dust/sand
moves southeast into Nye County. It begins at 18/1915Z and continues
into the night.

Arizona:
Blowing dust/sand originates in south-central Maricopa County and central
Pinal County. These areas are moving east, begin at 18/2045Z and continue
through sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
