DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1900Z June 19, 2012

Smoke:
Carolinas:
A large wildfire in eastern North Carolina is creating dense smoke which
is moving to the south. Remnant smoke from this fire has remained off
the coast and moved east into South Carolina.

Central US:
A large area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke is located
over the central US. This smoke is likely from the fires in Arizona,
New Mexico, Colorado and Mexico. The smoke extends from central Utah,
through Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, southern
Minnesota, Iowa, northern Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana,
Ohio and Michigan.

Colorado:
The Little Sand Fire complex is generating light to moderately dense
smoke which is fanning out to the north. The High Park fire in Larimer
County was fanning out light to moderately dense smoke to the east this
morning but has shifted to the north.

Arizona:
The Poco Fire in Gila County is creating light to moderately dense smoke
which is moving northeast into northwestern New Mexico.

Hawaii:
A fire on the southern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii is producing
light to moderately dense smoke which is moving east off the island.

Canada:
Large areas of light smoke continue to circulate over the waters north
of Labrador. This is likely remnant smoke from the large fires in
Labrador and northern Quebec.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
