DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 24, 2012

Smoke:
US:
A large area of light smoke covers the US from New Mexico, Colorado,
Wyoming and Montana all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Colorado:
The Weber, Little Sand, Springer and High Park fires continue to generate
large amounts of dense smoke which is moving to the east.

Utah:
The Grease and Dump fires area producing light to moderately dense smoke
which is moving northeast.

Wyoming:
Dense smoke is being emitted from the Russels Camp fire. This smoke is
moving east into central South Dakota.

Canada:
Numerous fires in Labrador are emitting moderately dense to dense smoke
which is moving northwest. There are also fires from the Great Slave Lake
to the Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories which are producing
moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving to the northwest.

Blowing Dust/Sand:
California/Nevada:
Along the northern portion of the California/Nevada border blowing
dust/sand originates around 23/2045Z, moves east and continues through
sunset. Another area in Nevada, near 40N and 118.5W, has blowing
dust/sand originating at the same time, moving east and continuing through
sunset. Numerous areas along the southwestern border of California and
Nevada are the origin of small dust plumes. These plumes run along the
border from 36.5N to 38N, originate at 23/2045Z, move to the north and
continue through sunset.

Utah:
In the western portion of the state, the origin of many areas of blowing
dust can be seen. These areas originate around 23/2145Z, move north
and continue through sunset.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
