DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z June 24, 2012

US Rockies through Central/Southern Plains:
A large area of remnant smoke can be seen stretching from northern Utah
into Wyoming and Colorado eastward through the central Plains state and
southward into southeastern Texas. Moderately dense smoke is seen in two
separate patches; one is moving towards the northeast across northern
Wyoming and southeastern Montana from the large fires in north/central
Utah; the second area of moderate smoke is slowly drifting south from
Nebraska into Kansas and northern Oklahoma. This is mostly from the
large fires that continue to burn through Colorado and Wyoming.

Eastern Canada:
Numerous fires in eastern Labrador are leading to a fairly large area
of moderately dense remnant smoke mixed with some new smoke this morning
as the fires continue to burn through this region.

Eastern Alaska through Northern/Central Canada:
Several fires are burning through central Alaska and portions of Yukon and
Northwest Territories are leading to a very large area of mostly light
smoke from eastern Alaska southeastward into the Great Lakes region. A
more moderately dense area of remnant smoke can be seen to the north of
Great Slave Lake and to the south and southeast of Great Bear Lake.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
