DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0415Z June 27, 2012

Central North America:
Light to moderately dense smoke remains situated across central North
America. The smoke extends from southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and
Ontario, south through the Central Plains/Mississippi Valley, into Texas,
Louisiana and Mississippi where it enters the Gulf of Mexico and becomes
obscured by clouds while being entrained into Tropical Depression Debby.
There is a small off-shoot from this larger area of smoke. The off-shoot
extends east through Tennessee, along the North Carolina/South Carolina
border and consists of mainly moderately dense smoke. These areas
likely consist of remnant smoke from the numerous large wildfire in the
western US.

Alaska/Canada:
An area of remnant smoke from the numerous fires in the Yukon, Northwest
Territories and Alaska stretches from northeastern Alaska through the
Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and then southeast into northern
Manitoba and Ontario. An area of fires in Alberta and Saskatchewan
is responsible for an area of mostly light with some moderately dense
remnant smoke over the northern portion those provinces. Remnant smoke
remains off the coast of Newfoundland from fires that continue to burn
in that province.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
