DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z July 2, 2012

Currently:
Rockies to the East Coast:
The large wildfires burning across Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado
continue to produce large areas of dense to very dense smoke moving
mostly east to northeast in direction. The large area of moderately
dense residual smoke continues to push eastward and is currently moving
into the Central Plains and nearing the Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and
Arkansas borders. Lighter residual smoke has pushed into the northeast
and along the Canadian/Atlantic coast and as yesterday along the US east
coast spreading as far south as Florida.

Earlier Today:

Much of the US:
Copious amounts of remnant smoke could be seen across Wyoming, northern
Colorado, and Montana extending eastward across the remainder of the
US this morning. Within the expansive coverage of smoke was a fairly
large area of moderate-to-dense smoke that can be tied back to the
many wildfires burning in Colorado/Wyoming/Montana. This thicker-type
smoke was very apparent over the northern Rockies into Montana moving
mainly eastward into the northern and central plains. Further east,
thin-density smoke could be seen stretching over the remainder of the
eastern US seaboard into the Atlantic Ocean and then lifting northeast
across Nova Scotia.

Nunavut:
An area of thin-density smoke could be seen across Nunavut. This smoke
is likely remnant smoke from wildfires that have been burning in far
Northwestern Canada and got embedded in the upper level flow.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
