DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z July 5, 2012

Central US:
A large area of light smoke is located over the central US. The full
extent of the smoke to the east can not be determined due to satellite
viewing angle. The states within this area include:Colorado, New Mexico,
northern Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southern Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri,
Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and
Alabama. Another area of light to moderately dense smoke is located in
the north-central US, centered over North Dakota. Both of these areas
likely consist of remnant smoke from wildfires in Montana, Wyoming,
Colorado and Utah.

Northwest US/Canada:
A large ribbon of light to moderately dense smoke extends from the
Pacific Ocean, through Oregon, Washington and northern Idaho into Canada.
In Canada, the smoke passes through southern British Colombia, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario before it is obscured by clouds.
This smoke is from the wildfires in Siberia that has crossed the Pacific
Ocean. Another area of smoke is located along the Ontario/Quebec border.
This may also be part of the smoke transported from Siberia.

Northwestern Canada:
Light smoke can be seen over the Yukon and Northwest Territories in
Canada. The origin of this smoke is undetermined.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
