DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z July 8, 2012

Pac NW/Western and Central Canada/Northern Alaska/Great Lakes:
Another very large area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke can
be seen this morning and early afternoon moving southeastward from
northern Alaska and moving eastward from the Pac NW. This smoke is
likely transported from the numerous wildfires that have been burning
through Siberia. Additionally, the numerous fires that are burning
through northern Alberta and Northwest Territories are adding to the
smoke through this region.

Southern Idaho:
An area of what appears to be light, remnant smoke with some embedded
moderately dense smoke can be seen moving northward from southern Utah
through eastern Oregon and extreme southwestern Montana. This is likely
leftover smoke from the large wildfire that is burning in southern Idaho.

Northern California:
An area of light, remnant smoke can be seen moving northward through
northern California. Several fires burning through central and northern
California likely led to this area of smoke. One fire in particular
burning in the southern portion of the Mendocino National Forest is
still producing smoke this morning and is likely the biggest cause of
the leftover smoke moving towards the north.

Central/Eastern US:
Excessive cloudiness over the central US and poor sun angle over the
eastern half of the country has made smoke detection difficult this
morning and afternoon. Furthermore, if smoke is seen over this region,
it is likely mixed with unknown aerosols and haze at this time.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
