DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z July 19, 2012

Northeast US/Mid-Atlantic/Central US/Central and Eastern Canada:
Large area of light smoke and other aerosols extends from off the US
East coast, through the Mid-Atlantic into Texas, and then covers the
central US and into southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
The smoke is then caught up around a low pressure system over far eastern
Canada and is pulled through the northern Great Lakes region and off the
Northeast US coastline towards Newfoundland. A large area of medium dense
smoke is seen covering much of the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest region. A
thin ribbon of medium smoke is also observed being pulled over the Great
Lakes region/Northeast US by the low pressure system. The smoke content
is believed to be remnant from various agricultural and wild fires over
the US and Central America over the past several days. Some Saharan dust
could also be mixed in from the Mid-Atlantic and over the Southern Plains.

Northern Canada:
An area of remnant smoke from agricultural and wildfires over Canada
can be seen rotating around a high pressure system from northern Ontario
through eastern Nunavut and back east over the northern Hudson Bay.

Saharan Dust over the southeast:
Large area of Saharan dust can still be seen over Florida and the eastern
Gulf of Mexico as well as off the Gerogia and South Carolina border.
The dust is being pulled northeast further out into the Atlantic at the
current time.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
