DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z July 22, 2012

Florida:
Saharan dust was seen this morning in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, Florida,
and the Atlantic Ocean south of North Carolina.

Pacific Northwest:
Ribbons of remnant smoke, most likely from Siberia, were visible in
Washington and Oregon this morning. This northeastward moving smoke
entered British Columbia.

Texas:
Smoke from the wildfires in Oklahoma yesterday was viewed this morning
along the Texas/Oklahoma border. Medium-density smoke moved westward
through Hardeman, Foard, and Childress Counties in Texas.

Kansas/Nebraska:
The Fairfield Creek fire in north-central Nebraska continued to produce
smoke overnight. Light remnant smoke was visible in Nebraska and
Kansas this morning. It is likely this area of smoke is a mixture of
the Fairfield Creek fire and the numerous fires in Oklahoma the prior day.

Canada:
Remnant smoke from the wildfires burning near the Manitoba/Ontario
border was seen this morning over the Atlantic Ocean near Labrador and
Newfoundland. Further to the west, smoke was seen in the Northwest
Territories, northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, and central
Manitoba. Smoke in this region is possibly a mixture of smoke from
local fires and Siberia.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
