DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z July 30, 2012
Canada: A large amount of remnant smoke covers Canada this evening from the Northwest Territories southeast across the country including across southern Hudson Bay and then extending northeast across Quebec and Labrador. Extensive wildfires across portions of Canada, but especially northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario; have led to this large extent of smoke, although additional smoke from Asian wildfires may have mixed in across northwestern Canada as well. Northwestern US to Southwest Canada and North Central US: An aerosol that is believed to be remnant smoke stretches from the Pacific Northwest across much of southwestern Canada, Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, and parts of the Midwest. Several large wildfires burning in the western US, including those in Oregon, California, Idaho, Utah, and Montana, have produced a good deal of this smoke. However some of this smoke is also likely from fires in Canada and from wildfires in Asia. Western Gulf Coast: A small area of remnant smoke was seen over western Louisiana and eastern Texas, with a large fire along the upper Texas coast the likely culprit of the smoke production. Other unknown aerosol can be seen along the coasts of Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle. Florida/Southeast US Coast: A large area of aerosol thought to be elevated Saharan dust is seen in this evening's imagery over southern Florida stretching from southwest to northeast and also covering much of the Bahamas. -Sheffler THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.
