DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z August 9, 2012

Western/Northern Alaska:
An elongated and large area of remnant smoke can be seen moving eastward
through portions of western and northern Alaska. This is likely remnant,
high level smoke from Siberia.

British Columbia/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
A large area of moderately dense smoke can be seen moving through portions
of western Canada this morning and early afternoon. This is likely smoke
coming from the Siberian wildfires mixed in with remnant smoke from the
numerous fires continuing to burn through British Columbia and southern
Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Saskatchewan/Ontario/Nunavut/Northwest Territories:
A large area of light and moderately dense smoke can be seen through this
region. This remnant smoke is a mix of Siberian smoke as well as from
the many fires that continue to burn through Saskatchewan and extreme
western Manitoba.

Western US/Northern and Central Plains:
A very large area of light and moderately dense remnant smoke can be
seen stretching from portions of northern California, eastward into the
northern and central Plains. Large wildfires continue to burn throughout
the western US through California, Nevada and Idaho and are leading to
this large area of smoke as it moves eastward.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
