DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z August 26, 2012

Northwest US/ Northern Plains/ Ontario/ Quebec
A rather large and elongated area of thin to moderately dense remnant
smoke was visible over the Pacific Northwest and Northern Plain. This
evening, smoke was seen spreading northward across the Minnesota/Ontario
border and southward over the Oklahoma panhandle along a frontal
boundary. Throughout the day, fires across northern California, Oregon,
southern and central Idaho, southern Montana, and northwestern Wyoming
continued to burn, producing thick density smoke. Another area of remnant
smoke was visible in Canada, and likely originated from similar source
fires.

FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
