DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145z August 29, 2012

Pacific Northwest/Northern California/Northern Rockies/Northern and
Central Plains/Southern Canada.
Wildfires burning across parts of N. California, E. Oregon, Idaho,
W. Montana and Wyoming are producing a tremendous amount of smoke
reaching as far as E Ontario and the Ohio Valley/Tennessee Valley.
Very thick smoke extends from the fires in Northern California into
S. Oregon and NW Nevada. Another pockets of heavy smoke from the
wildfires burning in Idaho extends into W Montana and S Alberta and
Saskatchewan. Moderately dense smoke extends into Washington State and
a larger section of central Montana. Residual smoke from previous days
in the moderately dense range extends from the wildfires as far east as
W. Indiana, Manitoba and as far south as Oklahoma and Arkansas.

To make things worst, blowing dust/sand across parts of S. Oregon,
N. California, W. Nevada are combining with the smoke making aviation
conditions even worse. It's somewhat difficult to differentiate smoke
and blowing dust/sand in satellite imagery.

Eastern North Dakota:
Mostly agricultural burns across the eastern section of the state are
producing mostly light smoke moving west into the C. North Dakota.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
