DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 2, 2012

Great Lakes and Mid/Upper Mississippi Valley:
An area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke from the western
wildfires was detected over the western and northern Great Lakes and
then wrapped down through central Iowa and western Missouri around the
periphery of the remains of Isaac. Clouds associated with another storm
system over the northern Plains and southwest Ontario inhibited possible
smoke detection over this area.

Northern Rockies to Northern Plains and Manitoba:
Smoke from the wildfires in Idaho extends eastward across southern
Montana and northern Wyoming into North Dakota. This was mostly light
smoke with some patches of moderately dense smoke in Montana and
Wyoming. The smoke also extended to the north into much of southern
and central Manitoba. There was also moderately dense smoke through the
valleys in central Idaho around the fires.

Northern California:
Smoke from wildfires in northern California was drifting to the west and
then southwest extending off the coast and then southward to a position
west of the San Francisco area.

Northern Canada:
A ribbon of remnant light smoke, likely from the western US wildfires,
stretched across southern Northwest Territories and Nunavut into west
central Hudson Bay.

Western Atlantic Ocean:
An area of light smoke was pooled along and ahead of a frontal boundary
off the mid Atlantic coast east of the Delmarva. A narrow area of smoke
was also east of Cape Canaveral Florida and extending further east into
the Atlantic.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
