DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z September 13, 2012

**Updated for blowing dust/sand**

Eastern US/Canada:
A large area of remnant smoke from the wildfires in California, Oregon,
Washington, Idaho and Wyoming is located over the east coast. The smoke
extends from the Labrador/Quebec border south over the entire northeast
ending along the eastern Ohio border, western W.Virgina border reaching
the North/South Carolina border.

East-Central US:
A thin ribbon-like feature of light smoke stretches from Missouri, east
into Illinois and Indiana. This feature is moving NW and is also likely
remnant smoke from the wildfires out west.

Wyoming:
The Alpine Lake fire in NW Wyoming is producing large amounts of dense
smoke which is streaming off to the south nearing the Colorado/Utah
border.

Idaho:
The numerous fires in northern Idaho continue to emit moderately dense
to dense smoke which is fanning out to the east and south.

Washington:
The fire in southwestern Washington State (likely the Cascade Creek fire
complex) is emitting dense to moderately dense smoke which is moving
the the west over the Pacific.

Blowing Dust/Sand:
A large area of blowing dust/sand is located in southern California.
The area runs from the eastern coast of the Salton Sea northwest to
San Bernardino. The line of dust/sand extends southwest reaching the
Pacific Coast and the Baja.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
