DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 28, 2012

Central US/Southern and Central Canada:
Light to moderately dense smoke could be seen extending from eastern
Montana through the Northern Plains and eastward into western Quebec
and then southward through the central Plains. This continues to be a
mixture of remnant smoke from the numerous wildfires that are still
burning through Washington, Idaho and Montana and those in Northern
British Columbia/Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Southeast/Mid-Atlantic/New England:
An elongated remnant smoke plume is seen across extending from the
Southeast through the Mid-Atlantic states and off the New England
coast. This is likely from the wildfires burning out west and in Canada
and it looks like this area of smoke is being transported by a cold
front that is draped across this region.

Washington/Idaho:
Numerous wildfires that have been burning across north/central Washington
have produced a small area of remnant smoke that can be seen moving
towards the northwest this morning and early afternoon. Some newer, more
moderately dense smoke is mixing in as the fires continue to burn. Fires
in Idaho continued to emit smoke this afternoon producing a small area
of remnant smoke moving eastward into Montana.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
