DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z December 17, 2012

Northeast Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas:
An area of thin unknown aerosol could be seen this morning in GOES-W
satellite imagery moving eastward across northeast Texas, southern and
central Oklahoma, and western Arkansas. It seems possible that some of
the makeup of this aerosol is elevated dust particles from west Texas
given the strong winds that were across the area yesterday.

Texas Panhandle/east New Mexico:
Plumes of blowing dust could be seen in satellite imagery from just
south of Clovis, NM in Roosevelt county stretching southeastward across
the Texas Panhandle for approximately 100-125 miles.

AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
