DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z January 26, 2013

There were no areas of blowing dust or detached smoke seen in satellite
imagery this evening. The remnant smoke noted in the morning discussion
is no longer detected.

Previous Discussion:
Southeast US/Gulf of Mexico:
Areas of remnant thin smoke were present stretching northeast from the
Florida coastline across the Atlantic Ocean and also southwest of Florida
over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This smoke is believed to be from the
large amount of agricultural fires that were burning in Florida and
the rest of the Southeast US yesterday. Additional ag burning taking
place in Florida south of Lake Okeechobee today was already producing
new smoke that was moving northward.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
