DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z March 08, 2013

Eastern Gulf/Florida Coast:
Thin to moderate smoke from numerous agricultural and prescribed burns
across the FL panhandle, SW GA and SE AL from last night moved South then
Southeast into the NE Gulf of Mexico this morning into this evening.
High level cirrus has begun to overrun this area making detection
difficult, but the leading edge appears to be moderate in density
and extends along a NW to SE line from 27N87.5W to 25N86W moving SW.
Moderately dense smoke extends back NE from this line about 150km around
27N86.2W but then thins out a bit but still traceable back to about 84W
just west of Tampa Bay.

US Southeast:
Numerous agricultural and prescribed burns continue across AL, GA,
SC and N FL... these fires are producing copious amounts of thin smoke
with isolated fires producing moderate to dense smoke. Much of the US
Southeast is covered with this low to midlevel smoke. Please see link
below for graphical or GIS depiction of these plumes.

Gallina

Earlier today... this region has become obscured by clouds making
detection impossible.

Central US:
Two isolated areas of light smoke were seen in early morning imagery.
The first was located over south-central Arkansas and the other extended
from northeastern Arkansas northwest to central Missouri. These are
likely composed of remnant smoke from the numerous agricultural burns
throughout the southeast and lower Mississippi Valley yesterday.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
