DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z April 29, 2013

Gulf of Mexico:
Thin to moderately dense remnant smoke was seen again this morning
over the western Gulf of Mexico. Most of this smoke is believed to be
from numerous agricultural fires that have been burning in Mexico and
Central America over the past few days. Some of this smoke may have also
extended inland across far southern Texas mixing with another area of
remnant smoke.

Northeast Mexico/Texas:
An area of thin smoke was seen moving eastward across northeast Mexico,
southern Texas, and central Texas. This smoke is thought to have come
from several fires burning in northwestern Mexico yesterday.

Central US/Midwest/Great Lakes/Southeast Canada:
An extensive area of aerosol that is believed to be composed mostly
of elevated Asian dust could be seen stretching from northeast
Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas/Arkansas northeastward across the Midwest
states/western Great Lakes into central Ontario, reaching as far north
as the southwest shore of Hudson's Bay. The dust extended as far east as
Michigan/northwest Indiana and appeared to be thickest over northeast
Minnesota and western Lake Superior. There is a possibility that some
smoke may be mixed with the dust across southeast Nebraska, Iowa,
southeast Minnesota, and Wisconsin but it could not be distinguished
from the rest of the elevated aerosol.

California:
An unknown aerosol could be seen moving southward along the coast of
northern California. It's origin is unknown.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
