DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 12, 2013

Central US:
A large area of smoke and perhaps blowing dust/sand remains to be visible
over the central US.  This area may contain remnant smoke from the large
wildfires in CA and Asian dust.  The area extends from the Great Plains
through eastern Montana and the Dakotas south and east into Nebraska,
Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. Another band of smoke is visible north of
Texas on the southwest Oklahoma border.

SE Gulf of Mexico:
Remnant smoke from last night's agricultural fires in western Cuba  is
visible in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The smoke is visible from the
north coast of Cuba moving north then west as far north as 26N between
82 and 85W.

The large area of smoke over the Gulf of Mexico from agricultural burns
in Mexico and Central America persists.

Central US/Canada:
A large area of smoke and perhaps blowing dust/sand is located over
the central US.  This area may contain remnant smoke from the large
wildfires in CA and Asian dust.  The area extends from southern
Saskatchewan/Manitoba, through eastern Montana and the Dakotas south
and east into Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
