DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 24 2013
***PLEASE NOTE: GOES-13 has been replaced with GOES-14. GOES-14 is centered at 00N105W which is 30 degrees further west than GOES-13. This position has an impact on the ability to detect smoke, particularly light smoke in the evening, compared to GOES-13. It is possible that areas of light smoke that would be detected previously are now not discernible.*** Smoke: Western Gulf of Mexico/Texas: A large area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke is visible across the western Gulf from the Bay of Campeche to the Texas and Louisiana coastline. Light smoke likely extends inland to central and eastern Texas, but cloud cover hinders visual detection. The moderately dense smoke is hugging the coastline mainly west of 93W. The smoke originates from numerous large agricultural fires across the Yucatan and Northern Central America. This smoke is moving north and thins out to the east. Florida/Gulf of Mexico: A small plume of light density smoke is visible in the far northeast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Apalachicola, Florida drifting to the southeast. Blowing Dust: Nevada: Blowing dust is visible in Churchill county, in west-central Nevada moving to the east. Utah: Blowing dust is visible in Millard county, in west-central Utah moving northeast. Four Corners: Blowing dust is visible in the Four Corners area of the west, moving northeast. California: Blowing dust is visible west of the Salton Sea, in southern California moving to the east. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
