DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z June 1, 2013

***PLEASE NOTE: GOES-13 has been replaced with GOES-14. GOES-14 is
centered at 00N105W which is 30 degrees further west than GOES-13. This
position has an impact on the ability to detect smoke, particularly light
smoke in the evening, compared to GOES-13. It is possible that areas of
light smoke that would be detected previously are now not discernible.***

Northeast US/Atlantic Seaboard:
An area of mixed aerosols with some smoke possibly mixed in over much
of the northeast. Portion of this plume that extends southwest from the
Atlantic over eastern Virginia and North Carolina has a better chance
of having a higher concentration of smoke than other aerosols as smoke
from fires that were seen burning across the southeastern U.S. has moved
north and east. Still very difficult to determine other sources of smoke
from this aerosol plume given the continued expansive cloud cover across
much of the south and central portions of the U.S. that has been rather
persistent over the past week.

New Mexico/Texas/Oklahoma/Mexico:
Remnant thin density smoke from large wildfires burning across northern
New Mexico has spread out south and east this morning.  Area is somewhat
elongated stretching from central Oklahoma southeast across central
Texas then curving back to the northwest from western Texas to eastern
New Mexico. A separate plume of remnant thin density smoke originating
from fires burning across southwestern Chihuahua state in north-central
Mexico is spreading north and east across central Chihuahua and mixing
with the remnant smoke from the New Mexico fires over southwest Texas.

DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:
