DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z June 3, 2013

***PLEASE NOTE: GOES-13 has been replaced with GOES-14. GOES-14 is
centered at 00N105W which is 30 degrees further west than GOES-13. This
position has an impact on the ability to detect smoke, particularly light
smoke in the evening, compared to GOES-13. It is possible that areas of
light smoke that would be detected previously are now not discernible.***

Southern California/Southern Nevada/Northern Arizona/Southern Utah:
An area of remnant thin to heavy dense smoke from the Powerhouse fire,
burning north of Los Angelos, continued to swirl across portions
of southern California and spreading northeastward over southern
Nevada/northern Arizona/southern Utah this evening. Smoke is moderate
to heavy in density across much of southern California and southern Utah.

Central Texas:
A ribbon of thin density smoke was seen this evening tracking
south/southeast across central Texas. Smoke is likely from two large
wildfires (Thompson Ridge and Tres Lagunas) that continue to burning
today, however clouds obscured the view of additionally smoke that may
have been produced.

Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
Remnant smoke from wildfires burning in Saskatchewan was seen in visible
satellite imagery this morning moving northeastward and swirling in the
vicinity of Reindeer lake. Fires continued to burn throughout the day,
emitting light to heavy density smoke that has spread west/northwest
this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
