DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0500Z June 7, 2013

***PLEASE NOTE: GOES-13 has been replaced with GOES-14. GOES-14 is
centered at 00N105W which is 30 degrees further west than GOES-13. This
position has an impact on the ability to detect smoke, particularly light
smoke in the evening, compared to GOES-13. It is possible that areas of
light smoke that would be detected previously are now not discernible.***

Central Plains:
A area of thin density smoke is seen in satellite imagery this
morning across portions of Nebraska/Iowa border southeast over eastern
Kansas/Missouri and Illinois. Area of smoke may have originated from
wildfires in the southwest U.S.

Texas/Louisiana:
Remnant area of light smoke is seen stretched across western Louisiana and
across southern Texas. Smoke is believed to be primarily from numerous
wildfires burning across northern Mexico and may also have smoke mixed
in from wildfires located across the southwest U.S.

Mexico:
Light density area of smoke covers portions of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango,
Sinaloa states as a result of numerous wildfires burning across southern
Chihuahua, Durango and Sinaloa.

Canada:
An expansive plume of light to moderate density smoke is visible in
satellite imagery across the provinces of southern Nunavut, northern
Manitoba and western Hudson Bay. Several wildfires burning across
Saskatchewan and Manitoba have contributed to this area of smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
