DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1702Z June 24, 2013

Smoke:
US:
Light smoke covers the US a majority of the US including the central
and southern plains, the entire Southeastern US (minus the Florida
peninsula) and up through the Great Lakes region including the all of the
Mid-Atlantic and southern New England. An area of medium dense smoke
covers the center part of the country over Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas,
Oklahoma, and part of northern Texas. The majority of this smoke is from
the large wildfires that continue to burn through southern Colorado,
New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico. Several agricultural fires
that were burning last evening throughout the lower Mississippi Valley
region and likely added to the large area of smoke in that region.

Canada:
An expansive area of light to medium dense smoke is covering a large
portion of Canada this morning, extending from the Yukon and Northwest
Territories south through British Columbia and Alberta. Another area of
light to moderate smoke covers much of central Quebec and extends through
Newfoundland and off the coast. This very large area of smoke continues
to be from not only the large wildfires burning through eastern Canada
but also through central and northwestern Canada as well as from Alaska.

Alaska:
An area of mostly light smoke continues to move towards the north
through northern Alaska. The smoke is from several wildfires burning
in the state.

FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
