DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z June 25, 2013

Smoke:
Western/Midwest US:
The large area of thin to medium density smoke that was visible earlier
this morning is still present in the evening and has shifted NE. Areas
that were clear earlier, such as Nebraska and Iowa are now seeing
smoke coverage. The majority of this smoke is from the large wildfires
that continue to burn through southern Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona,
and northern Mexico. Several agricultural fires that were burning last
evening throughout the lower Mississippi Valley region likely added to
the large area of smoke in that region as well.

Northeast US:
The large area of thin to medium density smoke that was visible earlier in
northern Quebec and NewFoundland has shifted south and is now providing
coverage in Southern Quebec, New Brunswick, and Maine. The entire
northeast is now seeing smoke, either from Canadian or US wildfires.

Alaska:
An area of mostly light density smoke is visible in the central and
northern areas of Alaska. The smoke is a product of many wildfires
located in the state and continues to move towards the north.

Central Canada:
The large wildfires taking place in Manitoba have produced an exponential
amount of light to medium density smoke that is now covering most of
the country moving NW. Northern Manitoba, northern Alberta, northern
British Columbia, northern Saskatchewan, southern NW Territories, and
eastern Yukon are covered in smoke.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
