DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z June 28, 2013

Southwest US:
A large amount of remnant light to isolated moderate smoke that was
visible earlier remains and has spread from the Mississippi Valley
to Arizona, California, and Mexico. Depending on the location of the
wildfire, the smoke is moving west/NW.

East Coast:
A large area of light density smoke is visible ranging from Manhattan
to the North Carolina/South Carolina border moving east. Due to heavy
cloud cover in the evening, it is difficult to say how far inland the
smoke is visible. The smoke is most likely a product of the Canadian
wildfires taking place in the north.

Montana/Canadian Border:
A pocket of light remnant smoke is visible moving quickly east in southern
Alberta/southern Saskatchewan over the border into northern Montana. This
smoke is a product of many wildfires taking place north of the area.

Central Canada:
A large ring-shaped area of light density smoke is visible covering
the center of northwest part of the country. The smoke is moving east
and south, and covers an area surrounding the border of the Northern
Territory and flanks the northern provinces of British Columbia, Alberta,
and Saskatchewan. The smoke also reaches an area north of the Northern
Territories in Nunavut, covering the mouth of the Beaufort Sea. There
are about a dozen fires currently taking place inside and outside of
the ring which are responsible for the smoke.

Alaska/Yukon/Northwest Territories:
A pall of light to medium remnant smoke from fires in Alaska and Yukon
is covering a large area from central Alaska moving eastward throughout
the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
