DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z July 21, 2013

Quebec/Ontario/Hudson Bay:
An area of thin to moderate smoke is seen in satellite imagery this
morning drifting eastward across western Quebec, Ontario and portions
of the Hudson Bay. Majority of the moderate dense smoke is located
over Ontario province. Large smoke producing wildfires across northern
Saskatchewan and Manitoba are likely the cause of this smoke.

Northern Rockies/Pacific Northwest:
Two distinct areas of thin smoke could be seen stretched across the
northern Rockies and Washington state. The southern plume of smoke covers
southeastern Idaho, southern Montana and much of Wyoming. The northern
area of smoke is seen elongated from northern Montana, northern Idaho,
and across Washington. Smoke has originated from wildfires burning
across Idaho/western Montana along with the Box Springs wildfire in
north-central Oregon.

California:
Most of the remnant smoke from the Mountain fire in southern California
has pushed west and offshore over the Pacific Ocean, with the exception of
a small thin extension of the plume just over the San Francisco Bay area.

Texas:
A small area of thin density unknown aerosols is seen drifting northward
across west Texas just west of Abilene near Big Spring.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
