DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z July 22, 2013

Smoke:

Saskatchewan:
An area of medium density smoke is visible in much of the province of
Saskatchewan, extending from Lake Athabasca south to border with the
US. The smoke is a product of the wildfires still present in Saskatchewan
and Manitoba and is moving south.

Calgary:
An area of light density smoke is visible extending from northern Calgary
south to northern Montana and SW Saskatchewan. The smoke is a product
of the wildfires taking place in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Northern Rockies/Pacific Northwest:
An area of thin to medium density smoke is visible over much of the NW
of the US. The smoke extends from the US/CA border, Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and western Nebraska. Smoke has originated
from wildfires burning across Idaho/western Montana along with the Box
Springs wildfire in north-central Oregon.

California/SW US:
An area of light density smoke is visible in the northern half of
California moving east through Nevada and Utah. The smoke is a product of
the Mountain wildfire in the south and Playground wildfire in NW Utah. Due
to the extensive clouds in the area, it is difficult to determine the
exact boundaries of the smoke in the area.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
