DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z July 27, 2013
Canada/North Central US: Numerous wildfires stretching from the southern portion of the Northwest Territories to northern Manitoba were emitting large quantities of smoke during the day. The thickest smoke from these fires generally moved to the northeast and farther up into north central Canada. Some moderately dense smoke though did make its way southward to just northwest of Lake Winnipeg. Thinner density smoke from these fires also extended southward across southern Canada and over the North Central and Central US. Western to North Central and Central US: Remnant thin density smoke from fires in the western US states of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming was visible stretching from the Pacific Northwest to the Northern and Central Plains. Over the Northern and Central Plains, the smoke from the Western US fires mixed with the smoke that was being pulled southward from the Canadian wildfires by an upper level weather system over Minnesota and Wisconsin. Moderately dense to thick smoke was seen spreading to the east across south central and eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana. Another patch of thick smoke from a fire in northwestern Wyoming moved to the southeast across central and eastern Wyoming. Moderately dense to thick smoke was also located near fires over southwestern Oregon and over east central California near the California-Nevada border. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
