DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z July 28, 2013

Smoke:

Canada:
A large area of medium density remnant smoke is visible around the
Manitoba and Nunavut border. The smoke originates from the wildfires
located in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and SE Northwest Territories and is
moving NE towards Hudson Bay. A larger area of medium density smoke is
caught up in Northern Quebec and is moving SW along with a storm in the
area. Northern Nunavut to southern Manitoba is covered in light density
smoke from these fires as well.

Western US:
A large area of light to medium density smoke is visible in the
western US states of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana,
and Wyoming. The medium smoke is most concentrated in Montana, as it
mixes with some remnant smoke from Canadian wildfires which traveled
from the north earlier in the day. The smoke originates from wildfires
taking place in all of these states and is moving eastward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
