DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z July 30, 2013

Western US to Western Great Lakes Region/Central US;
Widespread thin density smoke from a number of wildfires burning in the
Western US stretched from Washington/Oregon/California eastward to the
western Great Lakes region and the Mid Mississippi Valley. Moderately
dense to thick smoke from a fire over east central California extended
to the northeast across central and northeastern Nevada. Another area
of moderately dense to thick smoke from several fires in southwestern
Oregon covered much of southwestern Oregon and spread southward over
portions of northern and central California. Fires in Washington, Idaho,
and western Montana were responsible for moderately dense to thick
smoke which stretched from Washington across northern Idaho to western
and northern Montana. Some of this smoke even reached southwestern and
south central Canada.

Canada/North Central US:
Moderately dense to thick smoke primarily from fires in northern Manitoba
and northern Saskatchewan was visible over a good portion of central
Canada. A larger area of thinner density smoke extended farther to the
north over far north central Canada and from there moved to the southeast
across Baffin Bay and the Labrador Sea toward the Atlantic Ocean. The
southern end of the thinner smoke also appeared to get close to the far
north central US around Lake Superior.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
