DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z August 7, 2013

Smoke:
Northern Plains/West Coast:
An area of light to moderate density smoke continues to dominate much
of the west coast. Light smoke is visible from Oregon, Washington,
and Idaho as far east as Wyoming and continues to move eastward. An
additional pocket of remnant smoke is visible stretching from central
Nebraska through Iowa to southern Wisconsin and continues to travel
eastward at sunset. Another area of light smoke is visible through
central California including a small pocket in western Nevada due to
the Power and Aspen wildfires taking place there. Additional wildfires
across central Idaho, central and western Oregon and central California
have contributed to the smoke across this region.

Central Canada:
An expansive area of thin to moderately dense smoke is visible
covering much of central and northern Canada from the US border to the
Arctic. Smoke continues to swirl across north and south in portions of
Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, northeast British Columbia, Northwest
Territories and Nunavut provinces. The most dense smoke is primarily
concentrated over central Northwest Territories, Alberta, and Saskatchewan
due to the multiple wildfires taking place there. A smaller pocket of
medium density smoke is visible moving south over the border into North
Dakota and Minnesota.

Blowing Dust:
Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico/Southern Texas:
The large area of Saharan dust plume that has been visible over the Gulf
of Mexico and Caribbean is now making landfall over southern Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
