DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z August 8, 2013

Wyoming/South Dakota/Nebraska:
An area of light, remnant smoke can be seen moving towards the south
through portions of southern Wyoming and western South Dakota and
Nebraska. This is likely from the two large wildfires that have continued
to burn through northwest Wyoming.

Northern California/Southwest Oregon:
An area of remnant smoke mixed with some new smoke this morning can be
seen through northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. This smoke
is from the wildfires burning through California and Oregon.

Central and Northern Canada/Northern US Plains/Alaska:
A very large area of remnant and new light to very dense smoke is seen
throughout portions of northern and central Canada today and also into
parts of northeastern Alaska. This smoke is drifting southward a bit and
is reaching portions of the northern Plains of the US. Numerous wildfires
continue to burn into the southern portion of Northwest Territories as
well as into central and eastern Alaska. These wildfires are putting
out moderate to heavy density smoke throughout this region.

Central Ontario:
An area of very light remnant smoke can be seen drifting eastward through
central and eastern Ontario today. This area of smoke has likely come
from the larger area seen over much of central and northern Canada and
has broken off and moved east.

Dust:
Gulf of Mexico/Southern Texas:
There continues to be a large area of elevated Saharan dust that can
be seen across the western half of the Gulf of Mexico and into parts of
southeastern Texas this morning and early afternoon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
