DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 12, 2013

North Atlantic/Nova Scotia/New Newfoundland:
An elongated plume of remnant thin density smoke was seen tracking
east-northeast across Newfoundland and Nova Scotia this morning in
satellite imagery. This plume extends out across the offshore waters
of southeast Canada and is wrapping around the eastern side of a storm
system located just southwest of Greenland. Smoke is believed to have
originated from wildfires across central Canada.

Mid-Atlantic/Ohio River Valley:
Remnant smoke plume extends west to east from northern Illinois over
portions of the northern Mid-Atlantic states. Smoke is located on the
southern side of a west to east oriented frontal boundary. This area
of smoke likely is a combination of smoke moving southeast from central
Canada, as well as smoke tracking eastward from large wildfires across
the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies.

Northern Plains/Northwest US/Central and Western Canada/Eastern Alaska:
Numerous, large wildfires continue to produce smoke across the Northwest
US and north-central Canada. Smoke from these two wildfires areas have
resulted in an expansive area of thin to moderately dense smoke across
most of central Canada and northern US. Smoke also extends father north
and west into eastern Alaska as wildfires burning across this region
are mixing with the smoke from the north-central Canadian fires.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
