DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z August 15, 2013

Smoke:
Northern Plains/Western US:
A very large area of light to moderate density smoke is visible extending
from the Canadian border south covering all western and northern US
states. States affected include Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota,
Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Oregon, and Utah. The most
dense smoke is concentrated in Manitoba as well as Idaho. The smoke
originates from the fires burning in central Canada, which is moving SE,
as well as in the western US (California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
Utah) which is moving eastward.

Southern US:
A slim area of light density smoke is visible in the southern US extending
from southern Tennessee, northern Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and
large portions of Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. These areas of smoke
originate from the wildfires that are currently burning in the western
US and Canada and traveling south.

Central Canada:
A very large area of light density smoke is visible in Canada due
to the many wildfires burning in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the NW
Territories. The smoke extends from Alaska to the Hudson Bay. The areas
of the most dense smoke are concentrated over the Hudson Bay, and in
a swath extending from the northern NW Territories, Saskatchewan, and
Manitoba making its way SE into Ontario and the US border.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
