DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1702Z August 16, 2013

Canada:
Large area of light smoke from northwest Canada through central Canada
from northern British Columbia/Alberta to the Hudson Bay and covering
all of Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Ontario and south of the US/Canada border.
An area of medium smoke persists over western Ontario and also northern
Manitoba. The smoke is remnant from numerous wildfires that have been
burning over parts of north central and northwest Canada for the past
several days. Weather clouds in the area are likely preventing detection
of smoke as well.

US:
Light smoke extends from northern California and Oregon through the
northern plains and into the Mississippi Valley/Midwest and Great Lakes
as well as branching down through Colorado/New Mexico and into Texas
and Louisiana. An area of medium dense smoke remain over the Great Lakes
and Midwest region from northern Missouri through Wisconsin and north of
the border. Another area of medium to dense smoke was seen over much of
the northern and Central Rockies from persistent fires in Idaho and Utah.
All of this smoke is a mix of fires in the Northwest US/Rockies and
fires up in Northwest Canada which all have been burning for several days.

OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
