DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z August 19, 2013

Southern Canada/Upper Midwest of US/Great Lakes:
Very large area of moderately dense to dense smoke from N CA/SW
OR/ID/MT/WY fires continues moving east covering a large portion of
the Northern US and Southern/Eastern portions of Canada between 45 and
52N which includes: SD, ND, MN, N WI, S Ontario, the UP of MI and the
NW portion of LP of MI, Southern Quebec out to around Quebec City and
the St. Lawrence Seaway. A bit of the smoke is expanding SE along the
southern boundary of the smoke as well as the overall flow has sheared
out a weakening trof/upper low that affected the Eastern US over the
past few days.

Ohio River Valley:
A narrow ribbon of thin to moderate smoke associated with the sheared out
Trof of the larger upper cyclone that brought unseasonable cool temps to
the Eastern US can still be seen from Detroit, to Cairo, IL and down the
MS. River into Arkansas. This area is becoming quite difficult to see and
distinguish between overall hazy/pollutant conditions across this region.

US Southern Great Plains/N Mexico:
The other half of the large area of moderately dense to dense smoke
from N CA/SW OR/ID/MT/WY fires is moving due south covering the entire
Southern Great Plains states of: NEB, KS, W OK, W TX into portions of
Coahuila and N Neuvo Leon in Mexico. A pocket of particularly dense
smoke can bees seen over central and western OK from Enid, OK to OKC to
Dallas to around Austin TX.

Northern Canada:
Thin to moderately dense smoke from the NW Territories fires from 2-3
days ago remains trapped under a west to east oriented ridge across
the Northern portions of the NW Territories extending into the southern
portions of continental Nunavut and SW portions of Hudson Bay. This area
is generally lifting due north or remaining stationary....far SE portions
of the thin smoke are moving SE over Hudson Bay.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
