DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z August 19, 2013

Western US/Plains/Midwest:
A very large area of moderate to heavy density smoke can be seen spanning
from northern California eastward into Idaho, Wyoming and then into the
Plains and Great Lakes region. This is all remnant smoke from the large
wildfires that continue to burn through Idaho, southern Washington,
northern California, western Montana and northwestern Wyoming.

Central Canada:
An area of thin, remnant smoke can be seen moving eastward through
portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and southern Ontario. This is likely
from the wildfires burning through the Northwest Territories. Due to
extensive cloudiness in that region this morning and early afternoon,
the full extent of the smoke (especially through eastern and northern
Canada) could not be seen.

New England/Southeastern Canada:
An area of light to moderately thick smoke can be seen moving towards
the east through portions of northern New England and extreme eastern
Canada. This is likely a mixture of remnant smoke from the wildfires
burning through northern Canada and Alaska as well as the large wildfires
burning in the western US.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
