DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z August 30, 2013

Western US/Central US:
A large area of light to moderate density smoke is visible though much of
the western and central US. Due to wildfires in the west (predominately
the Rim wildfire in California) smoke continues to overwhelm most of the
nation. The moderate smoke is concentrated in Nevada, Idaho, Montana,
North Dakota, and South Dakota. Light density smoke is visible connected
to the areas of moderate density smoke in Saskatchewan, Manitoba,
Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, and Arkansas.

Great Lakes/Central Canada:
An area of light density smoke is visible over parts of the Midwest
that include the Iowa/Minnesota border, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana,
western Ohio, Michigan, and Lake Michigan. Due to the large amount of
cloud cover in these areas,at sunrise, it is difficult to determine the
exact concentration and extent of smoke that is present. However due to
the amount of smoke emitting from the Rim wildfire over the last week,
there is most likely light density smoke looming over Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, and Ontario.

Texas:
A large area of light density smoke is visible from the many agricultural
fires that have been burning in the Lower Mississippi River area
recently. The smoke is currently concentrated in eastern and central
Texas, eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana continuing offshore
into the Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
