DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z September 4, 2013

Northern Great Plains/Southern Canadian Prairies:
Thin to moderate smoke from the Rim fire about 2-3 days ago can be seen
moving ENE covering the northern 2/3rds of MT into S Saskatchewan and
all of ND. At this point, smoke begins to turn more southerly and is
described below.

Central US Great Plains:
Thin to moderately dense smoke from the Rim fire about 3-5 days ago
can be seen moving due south on the eastern side of a large ridge
affecting the Rockies. This smoke covers all of SD, SW MN, W 2/3rd
of IA, E 1/3 of NEB, across Central KS into the OK and N TX Panhandles
(slightly moving SSW). Burst of thin and moderate smoke from numerous
agricultural fires across Central KS and North Central OK can be seen
in the low levels below the boundary layer.

Pacific Ocean, SW of Santa Barbara:
A very high level band of thin smoke likely from the Rim fire that moved
south into S CA, Mexico a few days ago (but was very difficult to track
due to weather clouds)... can be seen extending NE from about 29N125W
to the Reyes/Concepcion points in SW CA. The band is about 50km wide NW
to SE.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
