DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 10, 2013

Southeast:
A large area of unknown aerosols are visible over much of the southeast
US. A light plume is seen moving SW towards the Gulf of Mexico from South
Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. GOES-East does not
provide a detailed enough perspective of the area in the morning, so it
is possible the aerosols could be a mixture of smoke originating from the
agricultural burns taking place in the Mississippi River Valley region.

Mississippi River Valley:
An area of light density smoke is visible moving moving westward in the
greater area of the central US due to the agricultural burns taking place
in Kansas/Mississippi River Valley region. Smoke extends through eastern
Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, eastern Nebraska, Iowa, and
Illinois. It is entirely possible that the smoke extends past Louisiana,
Alabama, and Illinois, however with the cloud cover in the region and
the satellite boundaries of GOES-West, it is difficult to determine.
Fires in the Mississippi River Valley continued to burn throughout
the day.

California:
A deep pocket of trapped smoke is visible within the state of California,
ranging from Tahoe National Forest south to Edwards Air Force Base. The
smoke extends across from the still burning Rim wildfire to the Morgan
wildfire located outside the Bay area. The smoke originates from the
three major wildfires burning in that that region. This afternoon/evening,
the Rim Fire continued to produce smoke that lead to a moderate density
remnant smoke layer stretching from Yosemite to near Monterey.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
