DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z September 11,2013

Mid-Atlantic/S New England:
Thin smoke likely combined remnant of smoke from the Central Canadian
fires and seasonal prescribed burns across the Lower Mississippi River
Valley, can be seen in advance of frontal zone covering all of MD, DE, NJ,
SE PA, Long Island, CT, RI and portions of S MA and Coastal Maritime Zone
from the mouth of the Chesapeake to Cape Cod and out to sea along 40-42N.
This area is moving ENE and could be connected to the area described
below across WV but difficult to say as it is very thin/non-existent
and in an area of higher weather cloud cover.

Lower Mississippi River Valley/Ohio River Valley:
Thin smoke from the seasonal prescribed burns across the Lower Mississippi
Valley and haze from other aerosols can be seen moving NNE across Lower
Mississippi River Valley (near the sources) across all of AR, S 2/3rds
of MO, extreme E OK, Arklatex area of NE Texas, N LA, Valley between
Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers in MS. This continues NE and moving NE
across S IL, W TN, KY, S IN and S OH into WV.

Minnesota:
A very thin area of smoke likely from Canadian fires (though possible
from MT/ID fires a few days ago), is trapped along the convergence zone
(secondary polar trof/front) SW of the main upper low migrating E across
Ontario covering central MN into far NW WI and portions of E SD.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
