DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 18, 2013

Smoke:

NE US-
A patch of light density smoke is present over Maine, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, and their respective Atlantic waters. It is thought that
this smoke has originated from wildfires in central and western Canada
over the past week or so.

Lower Mississippi River Valley-
A narrow area of light density remnant smoke centered along The
Mississippi River from southern Missouri down to Louisiana is observed
this evening. The smoke originated from numerous agricultural burns in
the vicinity.

Dust:

Blowing dust is observed coming from 3 dry lake beds this evening
1. From Southern Lassen County, CA moving east beginning at 2000Z and
seen as far east as central Perching County, NV at sunset at 0130Z.
2. From Northern Churchill County, NV moving east beginning at 2100Z and
seen as far east as central Eureka County, NV at sunset at 0130Z. This
dust mass is significantly more dense than the other two, and spans a
wider area.
3. From Eastern Mineral County, NV moving southeast beginning at 2330Z
and seen as far southeast as the Esmeralda County, NV border at sunset
at 0130Z.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
