DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 22, 2013

SMOKE:
No significant areas of smoke were detected in satellite imagery through
this afternoon/evening.

DUST:
Arizona/New Mexico/West Texas:
A strong storm system moving through the four corners area of the
Southwest was generating strong winds which are causing areas of blowing
dust. One area of light dust was seen just south of Phoenix and moving to
the east-southeast. A more extensive area of blowing dust was observed
over northeast Arizona and was moving mainly to the east into northwest
New Mexico and possibly spilling over into southwest Colorado. A point
source of dust was over eastern New Mexico south of Tucumcari and also
over the open fields southwest of Amarillo. Dust in these areas was
moving to the north.

OTHER:
Oregon/California:
An aerosol of unknown origin and composition was seen moving into
southwest Oregon and northern California behind a frontal system.

Alaska:
An impressive area of volcanic ash was seen emanating from the area
around the Katmai volcano in the Aleutians southwest of Anchorage. The
ash was being resuspended in the atmosphere by strong winds and is moving
to the southeast across Kodiak Island and into the open waters of the
Gulf of Alaska.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
