DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z September 27, 2013

South Central US:
Numerous seasonal fires and relatively small smoke plumes were visible
over portions of the South Central US.

Central US:
Areas of mainly thin density blowing dust were observed after 19Z moving
to the north from sources in southwestern and south central Kansas,
northwestern and north central Oklahoma. The blowing dust moved over
central and western Kansas and into southern Nebraska just prior to
sunset.

Southwestern US/Northwestern Mexico:
A streak of moderately dense to thick blowing dust was visible moving
to the southeast from a source point just south of the California-Baja
border in far northwestern Mexico. Some possible very thin density
blowing dust was also present over far southern California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
