DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z October 6, 2013

No significant areas of detached smoke and/or blowing dust/sand were
visible in satellite imagery during the afternoon.

JS

Earlier This Morning...
California/Northwest Mexico:
A faint aerosol could be seen off the coasts of California and northwest
Mexico this morning. A smoke producing fire in southern California to
the north of San Diego had produced thin to moderately dense smoke
yesterday that extended west and then northwest this morning. In
addition to the smoke, the rest of the aerosol seen is thought to be
elevated dust particles from yesterday's blowing dust event across
southern California/northwest Mexico. The elevated dust appeared to
extend north along the California coast to about 150 miles northwest of
the San Francisco Bay area.

Mid-Atlantic Coast:
An area of unknown aerosol stretched eastward from the Mid-Atlantic
coastline along a stationary frontal boundary that was hanging across
eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey this morning. The aerosol was seen
from the northeast North Carolina coast northward to New Jersey and all
points east, with clouds obscuring the view further north.

Western Gulf of Mexico:
As the frontal boundary was pushing through the western Gulf of Mexico
this morning, breaks in the clouds revealed a thin aerosol along the
Texas coast and possibly also over southwest Louisiana that is thought
the be elevated dust particles that were picked up by the strong system
as it moved across the Plains.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
